🚀 Getting started

First-launch flow

  1. Install Yomite from the App Store
  2. Confirm age (13+) and the AI voice notice on first launch
  3. Download a free voice — まい or fumifumi (~250 MB, Wi-Fi recommended)
  4. Open the Library tab to import a book, or Aozora Bunko tab to browse
  5. Hit play — audio is generated on your device

3 ways to import your first book

  • EPUB file: send via Files app, or use the share sheet "Add to Yomite"
  • Aozora Bunko: search and download a work in the built-in reader
  • Web article: paste a URL into the Web Reader tab

🔧 Troubleshooting

No sound / playback won't start

Check in order:

  1. Silent switch (mute) on iPhone / iPad isn't engaged
  2. Volume isn't too low (check lock screen too)
  3. Settings → Sounds & Haptics → media playback is enabled
  4. Not accidentally routed to a Bluetooth device
  5. Force-quit and relaunch the app
  6. If that fails, restart the device
Playback stalls or stutters

Synthesis runs on your device's CPU. Common causes:

  • Low storage — keep at least 1 GB free (Settings → General → iPhone Storage)
  • Other heavy apps running — close them
  • Low Power Mode — turn it off for faster synthesis
  • Older device — A12 Bionic (iPhone XS or newer) is recommended
Kanji or names read incorrectly

Register the correct reading in Settings → Pronunciation dictionary:

  1. Tap the "+" to create a new entry
  2. Enter the misread word and the correct kana reading
  3. Save — the override applies everywhere that word appears

Premium adds per-novel dictionaries, JSON import/export, and ruby auto-register.

Can't import EPUB / web article
  • EPUB: DRM-protected files (Kindle, iBooks, etc.) cannot be imported. DRM-free EPUB only.
  • Web articles: paywalled and login-required content cannot be extracted
  • SPA-rendered sites: extraction may fail; report problem URLs to [email protected]
Background playback stops
  1. Settings → General → Background App Refresh — verify Yomite is ON
  2. Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode — turn OFF
  3. Check battery optimisation isn't restricting Yomite
iCloud sync isn't working
  • iCloud sync is a Premium feature
  • All devices must be signed in to the same Apple ID
  • Settings → [Apple ID] → iCloud → Apps using iCloud — verify Yomite is ON
  • Check your iCloud storage isn't full
  • Toggle Settings → iCloud Sync OFF then ON to force a resync

🎙️ Voices

Which voices are free?

まい (young female, soft) and fumifumi (adult male, calm). Premium unlocks the other 29.

How big is each voice?

~250 MB per voice. Wi-Fi recommended. Works offline after first download.

Switching emotion styles

Multi-style voices (まお, みちのくあいり, 阿井田 茂, 凛音エル, etc.) let you switch styles (normal, sad, happy, shout, etc.) from the voice detail or playback panel.

Free up space by deleting voices

Settings → Voice management lets you delete individual voices. Re-download anytime; Premium entitlement is preserved.

📚 Importing books

Supported formats

EPUB, TXT, HTML (via web article extraction). PDF is planned. DRM-protected files are not supported.

Importing web novels

Paste a URL in the Web Reader tab. Next-chapter buttons auto-fetch the next page. Respect the author's and source site's terms.

Listening to Aozora Bunko classics

Search and download in the Aozora Bunko tab. 18,000+ public-domain works free.

Restoring Premium after device change

Settings → Restore Purchases. Signed in with the same Apple ID / Google account, it activates automatically.

Family Sharing

Yes — enabled. Family members in your Apple Family Sharing group get Premium without an additional purchase.

Refunds

App Store refunds: reportaproblem.apple.com. Google Play refunds: via the Google Play refund page. We can't process refunds on our side.

🔒 Privacy & data

What data is synced via iCloud?

Library, bookmarks, reading position, pronunciation dictionary, and UI prefs. Stored in your private Apple ID container — we have no access. See Privacy Policy §9.

Exporting a backup

Settings → Backup → Export creates a .novelvoice file. Shareable via Files / AirDrop / iCloud Drive. The file is unencrypted JSON — once it leaves your device, handling is your responsibility.

How to delete all data

No account is required, so data lives only on your device:

  • iOS / iPadOS: long-press app → Delete (also wipes in-app data)
  • macOS: drag from Applications + delete ~/Library/Containers/com.aitytech.yomite
  • iCloud sync data: Settings → [Apple ID] → iCloud → Manage Storage → Yomite
GDPR / APPI data requests

Email [email protected]. After identity verification we respond within 14 days. We hold no reading data, so most responses are "no data on file."

🚨 Report inappropriate content

Yomite is a tool that reads aloud content you import. We don't host or distribute content. If you suspect illegal use, copyright infringement, harassment, or other abuse (App Store Review Guideline 1.2):

How to report

  • In-app: Settings → Support → Report content, or three-dot menu on any book → Report
  • Email: [email protected] (subject: [Content Report])

Include the following for faster handling

  • Issue type (illegal / copyright / child safety / violence / other)
  • Book title, author, source URL
  • Specific location (chapter, quote)

We respond within 5 business days. Since we don't host content, ultimate takedown must be requested from the original content source.
